Alex Saint Ivy / Lightmeal / Fake Shemp
The Victoria, E8 3AS , [Venue Details]Alex Saint Ivy’s music is best described as “the sound of suburban frustration”.
Despite growing up in a UK town best known for its roundabouts and now half-empty shopping centre, his songwriting takes inspiration from classic American artists like Tom Petty, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen, and then mixes them up with more modern influences like Hiss Golden Messenger, Ben Kwelle,r and early 00s one-hit wonders The New Radicals.
He describes his music as “Indie Folk Power Pop” which gives you some idea of the different musical worlds that coalesce to create an Alex Saint Ivy song. Listen to his lyrics and you'll often find a mixture of wry observation and irony, opening up windows into people's lives like the traveling folk storytellers of old.
Lightmeal is an Essex-Australian four-piece of guitars, keys and drums, driven by melody and with a creamy blend of pop, rock and soul. They'll be launching a five-track, five-hit EP this year whose subject matter ranges from coffee to love and back again.
"Songs Nobody Asked For" by Fake Shemp is exactly that – a collection of songs that, well, nobody asked for. Nonetheless, it is a collection of songs Fake Shemp felt compelled to record, so they did.
